The Whether Station workshop for DRS Festival of Emergence is a wrap. This September UFO joined the DRS Festival of Emergence with ‘The Whether Station’ hosted by Fabrizio Cocchiarella (UK), Emily Luce (CAN) and Judith van den Boom (NL). The DRS (Design Research Society) Festival of Emergence is envisioned as a new type of DRS event. Not as formal as a conference, but something transcending timezones and geographies, built upon novel and experimental participant-generated content.
The Whether Station workshop worked together as a global team sharing presentations and discourse on Whether, resourcefulness, navigation tools, developing ecologies and expanding the vocabulary of design.
With the Anthropocene driving climate change, our understanding of how humans impact weather often remains mysterious. The Whether Station aims to enable resourcefulness by co-developing ‘divination tools' that enable a new human understanding of our potential future ecology. We propose new formats for research that capture learning through the development of tools, seeking new knowledge and expand understandings of our relationships with the ecology and its many potential stakeholders.
Through experimental tool-making, outdoor exercises, test-sites and time-zones, The Whether Station aims to triangulate the ‘whether’ to define and mediate new ways of translating ubiquitous natural forces, technological rumours and symbolic interfaces that shape new epistemologies.
